All entities on Figshare are fully searchable using either simple search or advanced, in field search. The content can be ordered and filtered by the users.
To search across all of Figshare, go to https://figshare.com/search. Enter the search terms and filter on the left based on content type, date range, licence, item type, source, and category. Users should select the filter parameters on the left and select ‘Apply filters’ to apply.
Data can be ordered with the default as ‘Relevance'. This default order allows users to see the most relevant items first and can be filtered to show 'Citations', 'Altmetric Attention Score', ‘Posted date’, ‘First online date,’ ‘Acceptance date’, and ‘Publication date’. More information on dates can be found here.
Users can switch between list or tiled view of results by clicking on the list or tile icon in the top right.
Basic search
The basic (or simple search) is available on public and private pages where users can simply type a search query and check the results. The simple search works as multi term search but can be also customised as phrase search, if the user decides to add the text between “”.
When using multi term search, results are ordered as follows:
In phrase search, results are ordered as follows:
Advanced search
Users can use Figshare’s advanced search parameters to further filter results. For information on our advanced search parameters, check out this article.
Phrase search vs. multi term search
Please see the following two examples:
The first search returns entities where the exact string is found and as well entities where at least one of the words is found.
The second search returns all entities that contain at least one of the query terms.
How to stop words being ignored
The list displayed below represents industry standards:
"a", "an", "and", "are", "as", "at", "be", "but", "by",
"for", "if", "in", "into", "is", "it",
"no", "not", "of", "on", "or", "such",
"that", "the", "their", "then", "there", "these",
"they", "this", "to", "was", "will", "with"
For examples of how these work, please see this article.
Can I use other people's research?
While the answer to this question for the majority of content on figshare.com is 'yes,' it is best to check with the actual license on the item record.
By clicking the licence itself, you can learn more about the different license types and rights for use, reuse, attribution, etc. Please see this article for more information on license types.
